Installing Brother MFC-L2700DW as Network Printer on Ubuntu

Linux
Tested on: Ubuntu 16.04+ If you'd like to read about what we think of this printer please visit our personal blog post Single Best Printer We Have Owned – We Love The Brother MFC-L2700DW The company's provided installer works fantastic overall, but there is one missing package on Ubuntu that breaks the install as far as scanning is concerned. Even with a broken install the printer itself works fine, only scanning will fail. (more…)

Convert NEF to JPG

Convert NEF to JPG

Linux
Tested with: Ubuntu 16.04, 17.04 I love my Nikon D7100. I take hundreds, and hundreds of photos with it and I shoot everything in RAW (NEF) format. As a result, when a situation comes up that I need to get the pictures to someone quickly, converting them to jpg can be annoying, and tedious. This is how I quickly convert NEF files from the NIKON to JPG so I can get them to others quickly (more…)

Launch Day…

Launch Day…

Linux, Windows
I've spent many years blogging as a hobby but my blogs were always a compilation of different topics. Politics, religion, programming, family, if I was interested in it, I posted it. More recently my wife started blogging and we thought it best to split the blog apart into more focused subjects. As part of that project I decided I'd start a blog for my tech stuff. Not a place where one would expect me to always write out long, thought out posts, but one where I, and hopefully others, would be able to find answers to questions, or use as a reference. (more…)

Linux, Raspberry Pi
Works with: Distributor ID:    Raspbian Release:    8.0 Codename:    Jessie 4.4.11-v7+ GNU/Linux Skip straight to how to set static ip This had to be one of the most frustrating things I have had to figure out in quite some time! As part of the process of reducing equipment I had to reconfigure my network layout. On my home/office setup, I have multiple networks so I can segregate my household, office, cameras, and wifi equipment in order to have better security. Usually this takes me an hour or so to swap around when I've changed stuff, but yesterday I spent over 5 hours working on it. (more…)

It’s Time to Stop Being So Afraid of Linux

It’s Time to Stop Being So Afraid of Linux

Linux, Windows
I have had several computers come in to be worked on lately where recovery disks are no longer available and the customer did not make (or have someone else make) the recovery disks when they purchased the machine. With one of these machines I was able to create the recovery CDs despite an on-slot of spyware, and then use them to restore the computer and get it going again. However, in other instances there was no chance to make the CDs and they were no longer available for the particular model of computer. (more…)

Disable Touchpad While Typing – Lubuntu 14.04

Linux
Distro: Lubuntu 14.04 Desktop: LXDE The following command will disable the touchpad while typing, and it will remain disabled for 3 seconds after the last key is pressed. NOTE: you can increase or decrease the time by changing the 3 to the number of seconds you'd like. syndaemon -i 3 -d I wanted this to auto load at run time so I created a touchpad_settings.sh file in my personal scripts directory and then added the files to auto load. The following commands worked. mkdir ~/user_scripts leafpad ~/user_scripts/touchpad_settings.sh Add the following line to the file and save. syndaemon -i 3 -d Now we'll create the applications desktop file. sudo leafpad /usr/share/applications/touchpad.desktop Add the following lines to the file, make sure to change USERNAME to your username and then save the file. [Desktop…
